Doha: The rich musical legacy of legendary Malayalam ghazal singer Umbayi was fondly remembered during a special memorial programme organised in Doha on the occasion of his eighth death anniversary, bringing together music lovers, artists and admirers for an evening dedicated to one of the finest voices in Malayalam music.
The event was marked by heartfelt tributes, nostalgic recollections and soulful renditions of Umbayi’s immortal ghazals, celebrating the life and artistic contributions of the singer who transformed Malayalam ghazal into a popular and deeply cherished musical genre.

Leading the musical tribute was Muthalib Mattannur, one of Umbayi’s devoted disciples and a gifted ghazal singer in his own right. Paying homage to his beloved mentor, Muthalib presented a selection of Umbayi’s evergreen classics, recreating the emotion, simplicity and elegance that made the legendary singer’s performances unforgettable.
Speaking on the occasion, Muthalib recalled the affection and encouragement he received from his guru throughout his musical journey.
He shared that Umbayi had personally gifted him his harmonium, a treasured possession that continues to inspire him every time he performs. More than the instrument itself, he said, it symbolises the blessings, affection and confidence that the legendary singer placed in his disciple.
“Every time I sing with the harmonium gifted by Umbayi, I feel his presence and blessings. His music continues to guide and inspire me, and this evening is my humble tribute to the great master who shaped my musical life,” Muthalib said.
Umbayi, who passed away on August 1, 2018, remains one of the most celebrated exponents of Malayalam ghazal music. His distinctive style, marked by emotional depth, effortless expression and natural rendering, introduced ghazals to a wider audience and established a unique musical tradition that continues to influence generations of singers.

The memorial programme featured a series of memorable performances by well-known singers from Qatar’s cultural community. Rauf Malayil, administrator of Q Melodia, Rafi Parakkattil, presenter of the motivational programme Vijayamanthrangal, Jafar Murichandi, and Nishad captivated the audience with evergreen songs immortalized by Umbayi, rekindling memories of the legendary singer’s extraordinary repertoire.
The evening was enriched by the accompaniment of accomplished musicians. Aslam Ponmunnad on the harmonium, Martin on the tabla and Muhammed Safwan on the guitar provided a captivating musical backdrop, recreating the classic ambience associated with Umbayi’s ghazal performances and earning enthusiastic appreciation from the audience.
The programme was attended by several distinguished guests, including Dr. Amanulla Vadakkangara, CEO of Media Plus, Abdul Rauf Kondotty, Member of the Lok Kerala Sabha, Mumthaz, administrator of Meghamalhar, and Jasmin Rafi, who paid tribute to Umbayi’s enduring contribution to Malayalam music.
Speakers remembered Umbayi not only as an extraordinary singer but also as a humble human being, compassionate mentor and cultural ambassador who nurtured young talent with generosity and affection. They observed that his songs continue to resonate across generations because they carry genuine emotion and timeless poetic beauty.
The gathering noted that although Umbayi is no longer physically present, his voice continues to live in the hearts of music lovers through his unforgettable recordings and the disciples who continue to preserve and propagate his musical legacy.
In recognition of his outstanding contribution to preserving and popularising Malayalam ghazals, Muthalib Mattannur was honoured by the gathering with a golden shawl. The organisers and guests praised his dedicated efforts in carrying forward the rich musical legacy of his mentor, Umbayi, through his soulful performances and unwavering commitment to the ghazal tradition. They noted that Muthalib has played a significant role in introducing the timeless beauty of Malayalam ghazals to newer generations of music lovers, ensuring that Umbayi’s artistic heritage continues to flourish.
